As the UAB School of Nursing celebrates their 60th Anniversary this year with events, we'll keep you posted with updates. A glance at this page will update you with photos and information from the latest events, the most current at the top of the page. Thank a Nurse who graduated from UAB School of Nursing, simply the best. Many thanks to Beth Franklin, Senior Director of Development, UAB Son.
At the 2010 Mad Hatter's Luncheon, a fundraiser benefitting the American Cancer Society, most women showcased their most beautiful or most unique hat. But the women representing the UAB School of Nursing used this luncheon as an opportunity to not only raise money for cancer research, but to also bring awareness of the School’s 60th Anniversary. To show that nurses care about cancer, they wore original nursing caps worn by nurses throughout the School’s history.
The caring representatives of the UAB School of Nursing included Dr. Doreen Harper, Dean and Professor; Dr. Rachel Booth, Dean Emeritus; Board of Visitors members: Barrett MacKay, Chair, Sue Ellen Lucas, Co-Chair, Jean Tomlinson, Margaret Kidd, Juanzetta Flowers, Fay Ireland, and Joy Deupree.
The luncheon took place at The Club in Birmingham inside the Grand Ballroom on February 25, 2010. Although they didn’t win the prize for the most creative hats, the women of the UAB SON know that future patients of the School’s alumni and students are the real winners. Their patients have the comfort of knowing their lives are in the hands of nurse leaders.
Building on a legacy of nursing education in Birmingham, the UAB School of Nursing prepares nurse leaders to excel as clinicians, researchers, and educators and advances knowledge and the delivery of high-quality health care in Alabama and worldwide. The school offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral programs, and provides partnerships to learn with faculty and student teams from nursing, medicine, dentistry, health professions, public health and optometry. UAB's School of Nursing Kicks off year-long celebration of their 60th Anniversary!
On January 11, the UAB School of Nursing kicked-off their year-long 60th Anniversary Celebration with a full day’s schedule of events, including a continuing education session on Complementary Therapy in Health Care Settings, a Nursing Uniform Fashion Show, a History Walk and a reception.
The event was held at the UAB School of Nursing and included remarks by UAB President Carol Z. Garrison, PhD, an alumna of the school, and Doreen Harper, PhD, RN, FAAN dean of the School. As part of the celebration, attendees were treated to a nursing uniform fashion show to see how the nursing uniform has evolved over the past 60 years. Attendees were also invited to take a six decade history walk and stroll through the school’s halls to reflect on its distinguished history and achievements.
For over 60 years, the UAB School of Nursing continues to be a leader nationwide in nursing leadership, offering innovative bachelors, masters and doctoral programs. As the UAB School of Nursing celebrates its 60th Anniversary, it will acknowledge and honor important milestones and alumni from its history, emphasize the continuation of the School as a leader among its peers, and raise awareness of the needed resources to launch the School of Nursing into the future.

Editor's Note: If you've ever spent time in the hospital, you know that your nurses are your first line of help, and often the face of your care. Many thanks to Beth Franklin, Senior Director of Development, UAB School of Nursing; and Abigail McGinnis, UAB SON, for the photos and information.
